Should I Start With Guitar or Piano?

I am often asked whether guitar or piano is more suited to late-life beginners.

How you want to use an instrument is always important in making a decision about one over another. In the case of guitar versus piano, if you want to sing Folk, Country, Pop or Rock songs, guitar would be a good choice.

On the other hand, if you want to make music without singing, piano would be better. The piano is laid out very logically and is easier to understand than the guitar. Its difficulty lies in the need to develop independence between the hands.

The guitar gives quick results if you want to strum and just enjoy the instrument. It’s also cheaper and portable. Piano sounds fuller at an earlier level. Reading music is virtually a necessity on piano. Guitar has traditionally made reading an option. Piano is easier on the fingers, guitar is harder.

There is nothing wrong with taking a few lessons on both instruments. That’s really the only way to come to a conclusion about the two if you’re on the fence. Once you’ve experienced each instrument first-hand, you’ll make the decision that’s best for you.

I’d also suggest trying both. What the hey, go fo it. Twice the fun. A keyboardist/guitarist who can sing can write their own ticket as far as getting into bands. Many other instruments out there as well, drums, bass, flute would be nice.
