Note to Guitar Players: Learn the Notes on the Neck

This book will help you learn the notes on the neck of the guitar.
Many, if not most, guitar players do not know the names of the notes on the neck of the guitar.
No other instrument suffers this same fate. Imagine a piano player not knowing the note names of the keys…or a trumpet player not knowing what notes come out if they push specific valve combinations. Yet, an amazingly high percentage of guitar players don’t know the notes on the neck.
This problem has certainly been created by the guitar world’s penchant for tablature and chord picture diagrams. Despite this, there is no excuse for the failure on the part of guitar players to learn what is absolutely rudimentary on any other instrument.
Without knowing the notes on the neck, a guitar player is reduced to being dependent on chord picture diagrams and tab. This is clearly a “monkey see – monkey do” approach. The limitations are staggering. Without the notes on the neck, there is no knowledge of what notes are even in a scale or a chord. The relationships between chords and scales are non-existent without knowing the notes on the neck. One would think that pride alone would convince players to thoroughly learn the most elemental aspect of the guitar.
If you need help overcoming this particular problem, check out my handbook “Unlocking the Guitar – Notes on the Neck.” It gives different approaches to learning the notes, as well as drills to master this most important aspect of the guitar.

I TOTALLY agree! Most of my beginner level students have an aversion to learning the notes on the fret board. Even some intermediate players who start lessons do not know but the first five frets or so. It’s difficult enough trying to teach basic theory to beginners…much less modes to an intermediate who cannot find root notes.

Hey, Matt, thanks for commenting. I visited your page; I like your music. Sounds a bit like Santana mixed in with other stuff. Very nice.
