‘All-Girl’ Band Inspired Cailyn’s Career

In 2005, when Cailyn was about 50, she saw the 'all-girl' band Sleater-Kinney and something clicked. She dusted off her guitar and started playing again. She released her own progressive rock album in 2009.
I played guitar for hours when I was a teen and developed the basic skills that would serve me so well later. I had dreams of being a rock star but I eventually married and began raising a family. The guitar was put away for many years and played only sporadically.
In 2005, I went to concert by the all-girl band Sleater-Kinney and something clicked. I went home, dusted off my guitar, and began playing and practicing intensely. Four months later, I nervously walked into my first open jam and a rediscovered the joy of performing live music.
I practiced for hours everyday, took a few lessons, and played every open jam I could find. Soon I was a regular with several local blues bands. I then discovered recording software; tinkering slowly evolved into a full recording project which resulted in a self-released EP in 2008.
That year, I began recording a full length progressive rock album, which was released in May of 2009 and which was well reviewed by many publications including Vintage Guitar Magazine. It was the culmination of a life-long dream.
I have also maintained a busy performance schedule, sitting in as a guitarist four to eight times a month with various bands. I also play bass for two separate classic rock bands. In November, I was invited to an industry showcase in LA and had the time of my life.

Rock on, prog chick! Awesome, inspiring story…more people should try to rediscover their “lost” passions in life!

As a somewhat “older” rocker chick that put it all on the back burner for years. It is very inspiring to read that one of us is making it, gives hope to me that I will be on stage again soon.
