After 30 Years of Playing Guitar, He Started Lessons

After 30-some years of owning and playing around with guitars, Pascal Marzella, 52, is finally taking lessons. He hopes to be able to play music with his son and daughter. Painting: "Guitar Player" by Paul Gaugin.

Singing in an oldies band in high school was the greatest fun I ever had. After graduation I bought a guitar, took a few lessons, and taught myself enough guitar to entertain myself.

After playing badly for 30-some odd years and acquiring about five more guitars, I decided to take lessons. I’ve been at it now for over a year. I still play badly, but through the patience of my instructor, I understand theory, can read music, and can appreciate more of what I listen to. My goal is to be able to play with other people, particularly my son who is fairly accomplished and my daughter who plays piano.

For over 30 years I’ve had to keep time with no one but myself, “marching to the beat of a different drummer.” I’m finally getting the hang of it and after 50 years can almost call myself a musician…not a good one, but a musician all the same. I’m loving every minute of it.
