About Music After 50

Leah and her Gretsch.

Music After 50 provides the tools, resources, and motivation for adults who want to start, return to, or increase their their involvement in music in mid- or- later-life.

The site is published by Leah R. Garnett, a 49-year-old writer and jazz guitar student. Leah is a former Editor of the Harvard Health Letter, a former Health/Science editor at the Boston Globe, and the former director of a website for cancer patients.

Says Leah: “I’ve always wanted to combine my personal and professional interests in writing, health, and music, and Music After 50 is my effort at doing this. Over the past several years, I have met many people who see music not just as a hobby, but as an integral part of who they are. As people age, they tend to look to return to their ‘authentic’ selves, before they defined themselves by their jobs or family roles. Music helps people tap into a creative side that they may not have exercised since childhood. There is also evidence that learning and playing music contributes to healthy aging on both physical and emotional levels. This is a great time, and maybe the best time, to start or return to music!”
