Selecting a music teacher is like selecting a mountain guide. Mountain guides are hired to ensure that amateur climbers get to the top of a mountain (and back down again) safely.
The best ones, however, know that they are also helping people achieve a dream that could not be achieved on their own. This is the kind of music teacher (and mountain guide) you want to hire!
Any teacher who is accustomed to teaching adults knows that older students may not find the time to practice as much as younger students. Does that mean the after-50 student is not motivated? Sometimes the answer is not even clear to the students themselves.
Adults are complex! You want a teacher who understands and respects this complexity and who teaches to adult learners’ strengths and weaknesses.
